Unexpected meeting of Nova Scotia University Alumni in Toronto

By Kimberley Taylor – Special to Euro Canada News/ The Canadian National News

It was a pleasure to meet the honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. We both attended the same university (St.Francis Xavier University) in Nova Scotia and have X-Rings from the school which are said to be the 3rd most recognized rings in the world. https://www.stfx.ca/alumni/everything-x-ring   At the conference I met new people who are in the industry that also wear the St.FX rings.
I am originally from Toronto but attended St.FX University with a basketball scholarship and took a B.Sc in Earth Science and Aquatic Resources. I then pursued a thesis based M.Sc in Earth Science at St.FX and Dalhousie University. My research topic was based on how coal deposits affect groundwater and developing a baseline study of methane in groundwater prior to future coal bed methane development or shale gas fracturing. There is currently a moratorium and opposition on gas development in Nova Scotia so that is why my study and the paper I am publishing is important.
I will be working under Seamus O’Regan when I start with my new career at Natural Resources Canada in the next few months. I’ll be a policy analyst so it was great to hear Seamus talk about how Canada will lead clean mining, value the environment, earn indigenous trust, take carbon out of the economy and bring in more renewable energy. Those are just some of the things he mentioned as Natural Resources Canada is doing much more. I am so excited to work with Natural Resources Canada and was happy to talk to some of the current employees at the federal Canadian booth at the conference!

I was volunteering with PDAC’s Mining Matters charity organization. One of the days at PDAC I took a group of high school students around the convention and we went to different booths, including MNDM when Doug Ford was giving the speech about the road being approved for the ring of fire project. We interacted with different companies and organizations in the convention as well as had group activities for students to be exposed to rocks, minerals and the mining industry.
