The Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Portuguese President and Prime Minister Mario Soares

Ottawa, Ontario – January 7, 2017 The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of former Portuguese Prime Minister and President Mario Soares: “It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of former Portuguese Prime Minister and President Mario Soares. “For more than 50 years, Mr. Soares tirelessly served the Portuguese people. He will be remembered as a figure who, as an activist and political leader, played a central role in bringing democracy back to Portugal and later, as a statesman, became a leader in Europe and on the world stage. “On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Soares, and to the Portuguese people. His legacy as one of the builders of modern Portugal will not be forgotten.”
